Before 1902 a Dr Kerr practiced from the corner of Iron Street as a 'sixpenny doctor'. For a contribution of 6d a week consultation and medicine was free. He decided to build a home and surgery either on land at the bottom of Longworth Road or at Ramsbottom Road, according to the decision of the District Bank, who wished to build a branch where the centre of the town was likely to develop. The branch took the Lee Lan/Longworth Road corner site and in 1902 Dr Kerr built Kildonan House which he named after his home town in Scotland.
The house was a substantial 5 bedroomed building with coach house, stable and hay loft, incorporating a small consulting room, waiting and dispensary. In 1914 he sold the practice to Dr Ramsbottom who later sold it to Dr Coates who was also the Railway doctor. In 1932 he moved to Derby and Dr William Gavin purchased the practice, until he retired to Scotland in 1966.
During this time there was a practice at the corner of Melbourne Grove and Victoria Road run by Dr Jackson, later a Dr Carrie who was replaced by a Dr Mcleod, later selling to Dr Bradshaw who was in a loose partnership with Dr Gavin. Throughout the war, in Dr Gavin's absence he looked after the combined practice as well as being factory doctor to de Havilland's in Lostock.
In 1959, Dr Bradshaw was seriously ill and in September Dr Ellis was taken on as assistant, Dr Bradshaw dying shortly after. The Victoria Road Surgery was closed and both doctors concentrated on Kildonan House, being Dr Gavin's residence.
